What dream are you currently turning into reality?
Something I’ve learned in this season is that my dreams are continuously evolving and changing. But, within my dream, there are some absolutes. From a broad view, my dream is to simply live a life that’s glorifying to God and use my God-given skills to communicate that with people who connect with me and my work. In a narrow sense, great design makes people feel valued and understood. I want to make people feel that when they look at my work, in whatever avenue God places me in.
When did you first realize you discovered your dream?
Earlier in life I was always the creative type, and I stuck out in my large family of hockey players. From a very young age I knew I would end up in some sort of creative space, I just wasn’t sure where. I pursued fashion in university and loved it. It was there I picked up a lot of graphic design and photography skills.
Moving to post school, I was working in an industry that I couldn’t find much purpose and fulfillment in. I found my side jobs to be far more centered around what I’m passionate about. Over time I kept getting more and more jobs working for churches, non profits, and people who valued my skill sets mixed with my faith background. It was then I realized my real passion was connecting my faith with my work. Often, they sat very separate and disconnected, but my passion grew as soon as I connected the two. I’ve never looked back since!
How does your faith go hand in hand with pursuing your dream?
My dream is naturally intertwined with my faith. It’s the only thing that has been absolute and never changing in my dream journey. Realizing that I have been given these skills for a purpose keeps me going and pursuing that dream.
What’s one or two practical steps you take to keep moving forward?
I struggle so much with this area. For me, being creative often meant living in an unorganized limbo. All I can stress is ROUTINE ROUTINE ROUTINE. I hate routine naturally, but I need it to thrive! A couple resources that have been incredibly helpful for me are, “Atomic Habits” by James Clear, and “At Your Best” by Carey Nieuwhof. Overall, find what works for you and your productivity. Stay grounded in the One that has given you your skills. And, make sure your goals are realistic enough to attain, but big enough to make you work for them.
What encouragement would you share with someone who’s going after their dream?
Going after your dream is hard and it doesn’t happen overnight. In a world set on perfection, it’s easy to compare your work and talents to others, but comparison is quite literally the thief of joy. So, keep your goals in mind, and remember why you do what you do. There are going to be times when you fail, but failing is just a part of the process. So, keep going. There are more lessons I’ve learned in life failing at something than getting it right the first time through.
