What dream are you currently turning into reality?

For a long time, I thought I needed to just have one pursuit as a destination-type fixation. Since I was about 16, my dream has been to write music and see it turned into something excellent. But, when I had put all my hope in that one pursuit, I found that I was happy or unhappy based on how music was progressing.

I’ve since realized that a fulfilled life involves the whole person. These days, I am going after several dreams at once. Music is still my most personal dream, but in the last two years, I have found joy in beginning a work-from-home job I love, and going to grad school to pursue a career as a clinical mental health counselor.

Oddly enough, I think that pouring into multiple parts of myself hasn’t made me spread thin, but it’s made me better in each area, and given me more material with writing music.

When did you first realize you discovered your dream?

Like a ton of musicians, I was little when I first started writing songs and imagining what they could sound like. I would record myself singing on a cassette player and then give myself radio DJ-style outros haha. I was lucky enough to have parents who always encouraged me to keep writing and eventually record music.

How does your faith go hand in hand with pursuing your dream?

I don’t mean to sound cliché, but music feels like a gift to me. And, I don’t mean that I am gifted haha. Getting to have melodies and lyrics roll around in my brain each day is something that feels special and outside of me, and I somehow got picked to experience it.

When I think about making music and meeting other creatives, I just feel God smiling, like they’re little presents He’s allowed me to find. That’s one reason it feels like the pressure’s off - This gift is something I get to enjoy on earth, and I feel so grateful.

What’s one or two practical steps you take to keep moving forward?

My strength is not administration, and I’m really lucky to have someone incredible in my life to help me manage the business and practical side of things. I know it’s not easy for everyone to find that kind of partnership, but it’s something that really helps me to be able to focus on the creative side of things.

What encouragement would you share with someone who’s going after their dream?

Your dream hasn’t passed you by. Forgive yourself for the time you’ve spent getting up the courage or shrinking yourself in fear. Surround yourself with people you can learn from and celebrate tiny victories with.
