David Elm

We’re stoked to have our good friend David Elm with us for this week’s Dreamos Round Table! David’s a writer, blogger, podcaster, and visual storyteller from Northern California, now building his dreams from Phoenix, AZ.

David’s passion for people, faith, and community is what’s driven him to pursue projects that make a positive impact in the lives of others. David’s passion for authentic conversation paved the way for his most recent pursuit in podcasting. On his show, “Groundwork with David Elm”, he fosters honest dialogue around creativity, core values, and thriving in young adulthood.

As a creative, entrepreneur, and life learner, David is currently deepening his education in Broadcasting & New Media at Grand Canyon University. We know you’ll be encouraged and inspired as you hear more from his heart, story, and pursuit.

What dream are you currently turning into reality?

I am currently creating a variety of media programs such as written articles, podcasts, and videos that inspire bold living, robust discipleship to Jesus, and meaningful connections with others.

When did you first realize you discovered your dream?

From the time I was very young, I knew I was created to use my giftings and talents to glorify the Lord and to create impact in the world around me. I was always outgoing, so that pointed me towards singing and acting on stage.

As I grew up, my love for performing evolved into a passion to connect with people from all walks of life. I began to pursue photography, writing, interviewing, and traveling.

I fell in love with documenting moments from the world around me. My dreams were always taken seriously by my family and friends, which encouraged me to pursue them full throttle.

How does your faith go hand in hand with pursuing your dream?

I think it’s so easy to get carried away with chasing our own dreams that we lose sight of God’s big picture vision for our lives. One question I like to ask myself is: Am I chasing my dreams from a place of lack or from a place of overflow? Because, I already have everything I need in Jesus Christ. No amount of human accolades or creative accomplishments could ever satisfy me.

One verse that has been foundational in my life is Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

What’s one or two practical steps you take to keep moving forward?

Setting incremental goals has really changed the game for me. Instead of trying to tackle everything I want to accomplish at once, I try to break it up and work on it little by little. This allows me to give undivided attention to every step of the process, yielding higher quality results.

I have learned that forming healthy habits, routines, and structure is not the enemy of creativity. In fact, it will aid in the longevity and effectiveness of your work.

What encouragement would you share with someone who’s going after their dream?

I would encourage someone who is going after their dream to understand how the creative process is just that: a process. And, that process is going to be unique to you.

Comparison doesn’t produce good work, hard work does. Focus on creating with excellence and cultivate your distinct skillset.
